The Theraplay Institute is primarily a training organization. We provide training in the Theraplay model
for mental health professionals all over the world at the Introductory,
Intermediate and Advanced levels. We
maintain a supervision practicum and certify qualified professionals as
Theraplay Therapists and Theraplay Trainer/Supervisors.
The Theraplay Institute provides treatment to families at our small clinic in Wilmette (Chicago area).

Theraplay® is a registered service mark of The Theraplay Institute in the United States, Canada, Australia, South Korea, and non-German speaking European Union countries. The Theraplay Institute controls the use of "Theraplay" and sets international standards for what constitutes Theraplay treatment and training. The Theraplay Institute maintains a certification program, and only those who have completed our rigorous supervision program and have been certified by us, may say that they are Theraplay therapists or are practicing Theraplay in their treatment protocol. Only certified Theraplay Trainers are qualified to provide Theraplay training that is officially recognized by The Theraplay Institute. The Ann M. Jernberg Memorial Award was created in 2003 to honor those who have made an outstanding contribution to Theraplay and/or The Theraplay Institute. Ann M. Jernberg 1928-1993, was the founder and clinical director of The Theraplay Institute, which arose out of her innovative, ground-breaking work with Chicago Head Start beginning in the 1960's. Her book, Theraplay: A New Program for the Treatment of Problem Children and Their Families, was published by Jossey-Bass in 1979, and has been translated into German, Finnish and Japanese. Recently up-dated by Phyllis Booth, the current Clinical Director of The Theraplay Institute, this book remains the definitive text on Theraplay. Jernberg wrote about Theraplay until her death, publishing numerous book chapters and articles. She earned a Ph.D. in Human Development from the University of Chicago, and was posthumously awarded the Outstanding Contribution to the Profession of Psychology Award by the Illinois Psychological Association.
