Barter Program to Offset Registration Fee*

*This offer is limited to our Evanston trainings only.

The Theraplay Institute is now offering participants an opportunity to offset MIM Skills Development registration fees by assisting with onsite set up and cleanup each day. Participants are expected to arrive an hour early and stay an hour after each training day to assist. Non-local residents can reduce their registration fee by 50%. No other discounts are applicable. Local residents willing to volunteer an additional 6 hours of administrative work prior to the training may be able to attend the training at no cost.

The Marschak Interaction Method (MIM) is a structured technique for observing and assessing the overall quality and nature of relationships between caregivers and child.  It consists of a series of simple tasks designed to elicit behaviors in four primary dimensions in order to evaluate the caregivers’ capacity to:

  • Set limits and provide an appropriately ordered environment (Structure)
  • Engage the child in interaction while being attuned to the child’s state (Engagement)
  • Meet the child’s needs for attention, soothing and care (Nurture)
  • Support and encourage the child’s efforts to achieve at a developmentally appropriate level (Challenge)
  • And the child’s ability to respond to the caregivers’ efforts

The MIM takes from 30 to 60 minutes and is usually videotaped.  There are sets of tasks designed to be used in each of four age groups: infant, toddler, pre-school/school age, and adolescent.  Materials needed to perform the tasks are simple and readily available (such as blocks, squeaky toys, drawing paper)

This two day training will prepare the participants to administer and interpret the MIM at a beginner level.  The learning objectives are:

  • Describe the basic attachment and theoretical concepts underlying the analysis of the MIM
  • Demonstrate how to set up and administer the MIM
  • Develop observational skills to assess the parent-child interaction using the four dimensions of Structure,Engagement, Nurture and Challenge; Theraplay is a modality of play therapy.
  • Apply a culturally sensitive perspective to the interpretation of the MIM
  • Describe 3 guiding principles for planning a feedback session
  • Utilize the MIM as a guide for treatment planning
  • List 3 elements of the MIM report.
