How Internal Family System Theory Informs Attachment Therapy (March 28, 2019)

Evanston, Illinois (9:00AM-11:00AM)

How Internal Family System Theory Informs Attachment Therapy with Jan Mullen, LCSW

The Internal Family Systems model expands John Bowlby's concept of the 'internal working model.' Through the lens of IFS, the understanding of the inner experiences and behaviors of children with attachment and other traumatic woundness is expanded. The therapist likewise can gain insight into how to arrive at the attunement which is key to therapeutic presence and healing.

In this workshop, we will illustrate the key features of IFS in light of how children form defensive strategies to manage deep hurts in attachment, with case examples. We will explore the phenomenon of internal attachment of Self with parts. We will also highlight the role of the therapist, in maintaining therapeutic presence and insights into how IFS informs the healing process.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify the key features of the Internal Family Systems model
  2. Explain the importance of the attachment of Self and parts
  3. Discuss the way that IFS impacts therapeutic presence

Jan Mullen, LCSW has been using the IFS model since 1990 in a variety of settings, in work with adults, children and families.
