Learning Objectives for Level One Theraplay & MIM:

  • Identify three play, attachment-based theories and how they support the work of Theraplay
  • Explain the benefits of using the MIM in your play therapy practice
  • Administer the MIM and analyze it at a beginning level to benefit families in play therapy
  • Utilize the MIM as a guide for treatment planning in play therapy
  • List three play therapy goals to be achieved during a MIM feedback session with parents
  • Describe the four dimensions of Theraplay, a modality of play therapy
  • Demonstrate one play-based activity from each dimension: Structure, Engagement, Nurture, and Challenge
  • Describe three possible ways of adapting Theraplay into play therapy treatment to meet the needs of a child with complex trauma
  • Describe how to guide parents to participate in Theraplay, a modality of play therapy, in a treatment session
  • Prepare parents to use Theraplay play therapy techniques at home to further therapeutic goals
  • Demonstrate adapting Theraplay play therapy techniques to three different populations of families
  • Apply Theraplay techniques to work through resistance in play therapy sessions

Level One training prepares participants to begin using Theraplay Informed Practice in their work.  We recommend beginning with an easier case to get practice and confidence before trying to work with complex families or trauma.  Professional development opportunities to improve Theraplay skills are available, including Level Two training with its modular options.

 

THERAPLAY: LA TERAPIA DEL GIOCO POLIVAGALE Cos’è la Theraplay? La Theraplay nasce negli Stati Uniti negli anni ‘60 come metodo di intervento per la diade genitore-bambino ispirato alla Teoria dell’Attaccamento.
Negli anni, Theraplay si è arricchita degli apporti teorici forniti dagli studi sull’interazione (Tronick), dai contributi dei grandi traumatologi (es. Van Der Kolk) e, soprattutto, dalla Teoria Polivagale di Porges.
Theraplay è una forma di terapia basata sul gioco: un gioco di natura interattiva e regolativa. Come esseri umani, infatti, condividiamo un cervello dotato di caratteristiche "sociali" che ci rendono capaci di influenzare gli stati affettivi dei nostri conspecifici e di esserne a nostra volta influenzati. Lo sguardo, gli aspetti soprasegmentali della voce (es. intonazione, volume, ecc.) , insieme al comportamento non verbale sono i mezzi più potenti di questo tipo di comunicazione. Con Theraplay, attraverso attività ludiche e interattive, in un ambiente sicuro e prevedibile, in cui è presente la figura di riferimento principale, il bambino impara, nello scambio con l'altro, a regolare la propria attivazione fisiologica e ad evitare la disregolazione e l’innesco di risposte difensive più primitive. Sperimentare emozioni positive in un contesto di sicurezza espande la Finestra di Tolleranza del bambino e gli consente di meglio gestire le proprie emozioni.
Come metodo di intervento Theraplay risulta particolarmente adatta ai più piccoli e utile in varie situazioni psicopatologiche (ansia, problemi di controllo del comportamento, mutismo selettivo, ecc.). Per la sua attenzione alla relazione risulta efficace  nelle situazioni di adozione per favorire la creazione del legame tra i il bambino e la nuova famiglia. Per i suoi aspetti regolativi e l’attenzione alla dimensione corporea ben si adatta alla terapia del trauma.
