Description

The Marschak Interaction Method (MIM; Marschak, 1960) is a structured protocol for observing and assessing the overall quality and nature of relationships between caregivers and child. It consists of a series of simple tasks designed to elicit interactive behaviors.The MIM takes from 30 to 60 minutes and is usually videotaped. There are sets of tasks designed to be used in each of four age groups: infant, toddler, pre-school/school age, and adolescent. Materials needed to perform the tasks are simple and readily available (such as blocks, squeaky toys, drawing paper).1

DEIS scoring system is a quantitative rating system developed specifically for scoring of the Dyadic Parent-Child MIM. It consists of 9 variables rated on a Likert-Type 5-point scale tapping dimensions both from the caregiver and the child’s perspectives (Salo & Mäkelä, 2006/2010; Salo et al., 2020): Parental Guidance/Child Co-operation (Structure and Challenge scored separately), Engament, Nurture, Playfullness and Parental Representation. 2

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify how and when to use the MIM when working with families
  2. Describe the protocol of administering the MIM for various populations
  3. Describe how to use the MIM video as feedback when working with parents
  4. Describe how attachment theory, emotional regulation and parenting/mentalizing theories as they relate to the D-EIS variables being assessed
  5. Describe how to administer the MIM using the D-EIS scoring with clinical training examples covering a wide range of examples of different emotional styles, and scoring points
  6. Describe how to interpret the MIM using the D-EIS scoring with clinical training examples covering a wide range of examples of different emotional styles, and scoring points
  7. Describe how to use the D-EIS manual for scoring and practicing scoring a variety of actual cases
  8. Introduction to Reflective Video Feedback, i.e., how to discuss the results with the parents using a short, video-based intervention.
  9. Analyze the parent’s capacity to provide guidance for the child
  10. Analyze the child’s response to overall guidance as presented by parent
  11. Analyze the child’s overall cooperation in response to parent’s guidance capacity and what role that plays in conceptualizing a case
  12. Analyze the parent and child’s level of engagement and what role their responses play in conceptualizing a case
  13. Analyze the parent’s capacity to provide nurture and the child’s ability to accept nurture and use that information to conceptualize a case.
  14. Analyze the dyad’s capacity to be playful when interacting and use that information to conceptualize a case
  15. Describe the role of parent’s representation of the child plays in understanding their attachment and mentalizing capacities
