Exploring Play Therapy Ethics with Expressive Arts

This program will explore ethical principles specifically relevant to the practice of play therapy while looking at the responsible integration of expressive therapy theory and play therapy clinical theories. Utilizing sandtray therapy materials and poetic medicine techniques, participants will experience right brain contact with the tensions and opportunities held in ethical practice guidelines while working towards more socially just practices.

Trainer

Marshall Lyles, LPC-S, LMFT-S, RPT-S, EMDRIA Approved Consultant, has over 20 years of practice in family and play therapy. He has extensive speaking and training experience and has worked in a variety of mental health settings. Most of Marshall’s clinical practice has focused on attachment trauma and its effect on family relationships. Marshall conducts consultation sessions with counseling professionals and leads training for both parents and professionals; much of his consultation and training focuses on the use of sandtray and other expressive therapies for those impacted by trauma.

  1. Describe ethical codes especially relevant to the practice of play therapy.
  2. Discuss the ethical integration of play therapy clinical theories and expressive therapy thought.
  3. Discuss the benefits of right brain exploration of play therapy ethical guidelines while considering broader social justice roles.
