Theraplay® is a child and family modality of play therapy for building and enhancing attachment, self-esteem, trust in others, and joyful engagement. Part of understanding how to use Theraplay is to understand how children respond to a wide range of trauma. This training will teach participants how to identify different types of trauma and what the behavioral effects of each trauma may be, as seen in play therapy treatment. This training also covers the role of shame in shaping development and how to identify if a behavioral response is based in shame. Adverse Childhood Experiences and their impact on the brain and overall health of a population are reviewed. Additionally, this training explores ways to prevent trauma, as well as unique protective and resilience factors that may help a child move beyond their trauma in play therapy. This training will address how to help children and their families heal from trauma using the four dimensions of Theraplay. The focus will be on adapting the typical Theraplay play therapy protocol in an effort to deliver an effective and long-lasting intervention. Cindy Mitchell Perkins, MA, LCPC is a retired school teacher, administrator and counselor of 32 years. She is a certified Theraplay Practitioner, certified Theraplay Trainer and a certified Thraplay Supervisor. She has been in Private psychotherapy practice since 1997. She specializes in Attachment and Trauma issues, and school and learning issues. Cindy works with all ages using Theraplay, DDP, Music, OT activities and the Listening Program in her practice.
– Provides an overview of the leading types of trauma that children and their families may be exposed to.
– Provides an overview of the unique effects each type of trauma may have on a child’s behavior and development.
– Illustrates how shame develops, is reinforced, and how children whose shame response is triggered require a unique attachment-focused intervention to move beyond it
– Provides an overview of trauma prevention, resiliency, and protective factors that must be considered when developing interventions for families affected by trauma
– Outlines how trauma affects Theraplay treatment
– Describes how trauma-informed Theraplay works with children and families in the Foster Care system
1. Describe at least four different types of trauma and the effects those traumas have on children in play therapy treatment
2. Explain how Adverse Childhood experiences affect the lifespan of a person
3. List at least four behavior effects of trauma and how they are seen in play therapy treatment
4. Name three considerations when determining if Theraplay is the appropriate intervention for a child or family
5. Demonstrate the ability to create one play therapy treatment goal for each of Theraplay’s 4 dimensions
6. Identify three issues that require consideration before working with a foster care family
