Working with families who have experienced trauma can be demanding. Merging Theraplay® and Brainspotting can positively enhance the treatment experience and prognosis. Theraplay is a child and family modality of play therapy for building and enhancing attachment, self-esteem, trust in others, and joyful engagement. It is based on the natural patterns of playful, healthy interaction between parent and child and is personal, physical, and fun. On the other hand, Brainspotting can treat trauma itself. In this training we will discuss the benefits and particulars of working with Theraplay and Brainspotting, as merging the two modalities can complement each other when working with families who have experienced trauma. In this training we will talk about co-regulation, uncertainty, mentalization, attunement, and how these are important in trauma work. We will do this through the use of case examples and theoretical discussion; this workshop will examine the two modalities, their capacity to be utilized in treatment together, and how to integrate the two.
- Identify the similarities and differences of how Theraplay and Brainspotting complement each other
- Describe the benefits of combining Brainspotting and Theraplay in treatment
- Describe the four dimensions of Theraplay when working with Brainspotting
- Describe different Brainspotting setups when working with Theraplay
- Describe working with caregivers through mentalizing, attunement, and transgenerational trauma by integrating Brainspotting and Theraplay
