Module 2

Theraplay® is a child and family modality of play therapy for building and enhancing attachment, self-esteem, trust in others, and joyful engagement. Part of understanding how to use Theraplay is to understand how children respond to a wide range of trauma. This training will teach participants how to identify different types of trauma and what the behavioral effects of each trauma may be, as seen in play therapy treatment.

Theraplay involves the parents in play therapy an immediate and positive way.  The involvement gives them experiences of success and pride in their children so they can feel motivated to support them through the play therapy process. Through work with the parents, including helping them develop empathy for their child, conveying practitioner empathy for them, and building their confidence in their parenting capacities, practitioners can support long-term change in the family system.  This four-hour training is designed to teach participants the fundamentals of working with a wide range of parents and caregivers using the Theraplay model.

Theraplay play therapy interactions focus on four essential qualities found in parent-child relationships: Structure, Engagement, Nurture, and Challenge. Theraplay play therapy sessions create an active, emotional connection between the child and parent or caregiver, resulting in a changed view of the self as worthy and lovable and of relationships as positive and rewarding. Theraplay helps you create a playful atmosphere where children are happy to experience the intervention, thus allowing them to quickly become fully engaged in the therapeutic process.

Theraplay® is a child and family modality of play therapy for building and enhancing attachment, self-esteem, trust in others, and joyful engagement. Part of understanding how to use Theraplay is to understand how children respond to a wide range of trauma. This training will teach participants how to identify different types of trauma and what the behavioral effects of each trauma may be, as seen in play therapy treatment. This training also covers the role of shame in shaping development and how to identify if a behavioral response is based in shame. Adverse Childhood Experiences and their impact on the brain and overall health of a population are reviewed.

This module will explore how to analyze the Marschak Interaction Method (MIM).  The MIM is a structured technique for observing and assessing the overall quality and nature of relationships between caregivers and children, and forms the basis for play therapy treatment.
